Student Work

Cook It Kitchen Gadgets

By Carly Wright

The Idea

Several popular “As Seen on TV” items were combined into a cohesive product line of kitchen gadgets marketed to college students and young adults. These products were re-branded and packaged as Cook It Kitchen Gadgets and aim to make cooking easy and fun, even if you don’t have your own kitchen. These products could provide students with healthier eating options if they were marketed more successfully.

The inspiration behind the design was the products themselves – all really great products, but with horrible packaging. The final re-design was made to be appealing to a target market (college students and young adults) that would really benefit from such products. Students often rely on vending machines or pizza delivery as their only option for eating during off-hours when the cafeteria is closed; these products allow for other (and hopefully healthier) meal options.

Delivery of Work

Although this was a student project, the Cook It line of kitchen gadgets would be sold in a retail environment similar to Target. Simple icons, easy instructions, and a bold color palette were used to be eye-catching and to eliminate the possibility of an information overload (which seems to be a problem on most "As Seen on TV" products' packaging). In addition to this, the copy on each package is intended to be witty, with an almost-sarcastic tone, to further appeal to the targeted audience.

The Results

The final re-design made the previously under-appreciated products more appealing to an audience who would greatly benefit from the use of such items. By re-designing the packaging and consequently re-directing the target market, the Cook It Kitchen Gadgets line hopes to increase product sales. In addition to this, these products provide a way for college students (or other young adults with little to no cooking knowledge) to have healthier meal options instead of ordering pizza every night.
