Phasma Ex Machina

By Clinton Lugert of THEY design

The Idea

Phasma Ex Machina explores the grey area between life and death and the ways we cope with devastating loss. After the deaths of his parents, Cody, becomes obsessed with the fringe science of the supernatural and invents a machine in an attempt to establish contact with the other side. This story of holding on to grief and the consequences of obsession laid fertile ground for a poster concepts – all of which involved the character being bound by his own creation which is represented by the wires.

For the execution we tangled Sasha Andreev up in phosphorescent wire and shot at Clark Patrick’s studio. The poses ranged from Adam & God at the Sistine Chapel to a marionette. The correct tone was struck with the single solitary pose shown on the poster today.

Delivery of Work

The poster is hand silk screen printed on metallic paper with metallic ink. Because the image can be lost in a glare the print takes on a more ethereal quality.

The Results

The posters were sold at the cast and crew screening, premiere and film festivals and are still available for sale online at www.THEY-design.com. Phasma Ex Machina (Now titled Ghost From The Machine) has been picked up for distribution by Screen Gems and will be released for online streaming and disc on July 26th 2011.
