Meet Bill Thorburn

Thorburn started his career as the Design Director for Dayton’s-Hudson’s-Marshall Fields (now Macy’s). He opened The Thorburn Group in 1994 with the pioneering vision that a design firm could take a greater role in brand development, moving from an executional role to a central and strategic one. The firm’s belief is that “a brand that finds its way into the consumer’s heart is a brand elevated, and that’s how we solve business problems, by finding a spark and setting a fire. In this crowded market place, design is the most potent tool for differentiating one’s product.” The Thorburn Group’s clients include some of the world’s most prestigious brands such as Coke, Harley Davidson, Disney, Formica, VH1, United Colors of Benetton, Nike, Porsche, LaCoste, Capital Records, and Hallmark. The firm’s work is in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Smithsonian Institute, and The Library of Congress, and has received awards from such well-regarded organizations as D&AD, Communication Arts, ID Magazine, The One Show, AIGA, Print Magazine, New York Type Directors Club, and Tokyo Art Directors Club, among others. About Lunch with a Visionary

To celebrate AIGA 100 in 2014,  we are offering a special Lunch with a Legend series. This is a unique opportunity to learn firsthand from Minnesota’s design luminaries. The intimate lunches offer a range of topics for designers at various stages of their careers. This program is a mini series within the legacy Luncheons program hosted by AIGA Minnesota, and is a component of the AIGA Minnesota Mentor Program. Contact Leadership

With strong design thinking and creative execution, Amanda has been a graphic designer and effective visual communicator for the past 15 years. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor’s degree in Design Communication in 2001. Since graduating she has worked at such companies as SUPERVALU, USP Structural Connectors, and Syncada from Visa. Currently she is an in-house designer at Thrivent Financial.

She sees the big picture and understands that her designs have to do more than look visually appealing; they have to convey the brand, communicate a message, and help achieve the desired goals. Passionate about the brands and designs that she works on, she is always looking for a new, creative, and innovative way to express an idea or message.

Amanda has become increasingly active in AIGA Minnesota over the past few years as a member of the In-House Designers Committee, for which she served as the Committee Chair for a year and a half, and now as the Director of Career Practice.
