Luncheon with Ideas that Kick

Meet the creative minds who have innovated mass market breakfast cereal packaging, competing with 64 feet of big-brand cardboard billboarding. Jenny and Stefan will share how they won shelf space for wholesome cereals by staying true to multiple brand stories, respecting the budgets of mom shoppers and minimizing their impact on mother earth — from neighborhood co-ops to the biggest of the big box retailers. A “no cardboard waste, no cardboard taste” is just the beginning. They’ll also be serving up the business strategies and stats, as well the creative approach that rounded out these breakfast success stories.

Stefan Hartung, Co-Founder, Kick

Born and raised in Germany, Stefan co-founded Minneapolis design agency Kick (as HartungKemp) in 2001. Stefan’s idea of a Shelf Kicker™ is a product or package that makes such an impression with consumers, it pushes the competition off the shelf. National and international client relationships include Johnson & Johnson, PepsiCo, Target, Best Buy, and MOM Brands. Kick also co-launched Juil, a new international lifestyle brand.

Jennifer Sall, Creative Director, MOM Brands

Jennifer was first hired by MOM Brands (then Malt-O-Meal Company) as a production artist and has since worked her way up to Creative Director for this privately held breakfast-cereal company. MOM Brands, once known only for the little box of hot cereal that we grew up on, is now the third-largest cereal company in the US, with a growing list of brands including Three Sisters, Bear River Valley, Mom’s Best Cereals and Sally’s.

Jenny Schmitz-Hinshaw
Director of Legacy Programming
Jenny has been a member of AIGA Minnesota since 2000, volunteering on the Design Camp® committee for several years, and serving as co-chair in 2010. She then served on AIGA Minnesota’s board of directors as the director of affinity programming. In this role, she led the affinity groups, which included emerging designers, in-house designers, solopreneurs, sustainable design, veteran designers and UX. From 2012-14, Jenny served as president, overseeing the chapter’s 75 yearly events and initiatives, providing members with a wide variety of opportunities to learn, be inspired, and make new connections.

Jenny’s design career has been focused on the education and healthcare fields. She has extensive experience with in-house creative teams, currently as a designer and project manager with Smiths Medical.
