The Minnesota Graphic Design 79 exhibition actually opened in December 1978. Robert Fleming once again chaired the second non-juried show sponsored by MGDA. The work of nineteen graphic designers was featured on 31 display panels. Controversy ensued when a piece showing a woman kissing a man’s foot persuaded MGDA of the necessity to have juried exhibitions in the future.

Materials in the exhibition included annual reports, architectural signage, book design, brochures, packaging, posters, and corporate identity programs. The exhibit opened at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) Gallery and toured to the Hennepin County Government Center, Moorhead State University, the Art Institute at the Depot in Duluth, and the Minnesota Society of Architects (AIA) state convention.
