She's driven by her Texas roots, her accountant (who also happens to be her fiance), dad jokes, late 90s emo, that gnawing feeling in the pit of her stomach that never goes away, her two dogs named Barbara & Larry, beer(s), the memory of her mother, Townes Van Zandt, building fired, food and eating it, and the open road. Other hobbies include getting buckets, running, collecting hot sauce, and talking about how she's going to learn the drums.

  • Branding the Movement

    Workshop

“Thus all Art is propaganda and ever must be[…]. I do not care a damn for any art that is not used for propaganda. But I do care when propaganda is confined to one side while the other is stripped and silent.” –W.E.B.DuBois (full quote found here) We here at Blackbird Revolt recognize the impact of creative art forms within social justice movements and the part we can all play in furthering positive change in our communities. During this workshop, we will analyze and critique the branding of various social justice movements and how their visual messaging impacted (and still impacts) both positive and negative social change. Participants will then collaborate with each other using the design research process to create their own campaigns around these concepts and exploring equity and representation using design.

  • The Nature of Patterns

    Workshop

Instructor Lindsay Nohl will provide a hands-on workshop in demystifying, then re-creating, some of history’s most exciting pattern types. Participants will learn how to create their own patterns by decoding the foundations of some of history’s pattern masters. Learn how to create repeating patterns from scratch inspired by William Morris, Josef Frank, and influenced by Art Nouveau, Moroccan Tile Work, and traditional French patterns.

  • Beyond Black Mirror: Speculative Design for All

    Workshop

Remember that terrifying episode of Black Mirror where everyone’s social standing is determined by how many likes they get? That episode provoked a national conversation about the role of social media in our lives. While this is a pretty grim example of speculative design, did you know it can be used for good too? Speculative design is a tool used by artists, designers, product owners and more to help see beyond the day to day. Use your imagination as we guide you through a series of games and exercises that will help you see the future! You’ll walk away inspired, and with a set of tools you can use to facilitate future-forward design thinking in your daily life.

  • Bulletproof Ideation with the Bedno Diagram

    Workshop

Seemingly lost to the dustbin of history (seriously, try Googling it) the Bedno Diagram (named for Chicago designer and educator Ed Bedno) is a creative lifesaver. Similar to those diagrams we all drew in biology class to learn about genotypes, the Bedno Diagram applies the matrix to design concepting. At a basic level its a tool that practically guarantees that you’ll always be able to generate workable ideas but Its real power is as a strategy for getting to places that you’d never imagine. In this workshop we’ll run through a hands-on demonstration, then we’ll look at an iconic piece of graphic design and reverse engineer the concept with a Bedno Diagram, and look at applying it to more abstract themes.
