Purpose of The Work: This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Kara Walker: My Compliment, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love, a retrospective of Kara Walker’s work. It includes several critical essays, a visual essay by the artist, a lexicon of the artist’s imagery, and a plate selection. The plate section contains works of notably different scale which allowed for an intimate presentation of her smaller works, and five gatefolds displaying her larger tableaux.
