Purpose of the Work: In the September 2006 issue of GQ, the Guthrie Theater was hailed as “one of the most important buildings of the 21st century.” When officials from the theater asked us to develop a wayfinding and signage system in early 2005, the new building was a massive skeleton. Over the next year-and-a-half it became a nine-story, 250,000-square-foot monolith of steel and glass featuring an “endless bridge” extending over the banks of the Mississippi River. The theater includes an 1,100-seat thrust stage theater, 700-seat proscenium theater, 200-seat studio theater with flexible seating, three main rehearsal rooms, 19 dressing rooms, production and support facilities, four classrooms, offices for its administrative staff, plus a gift shop, restaurants, bars and a parking ramp for patrons and guests.
